Zebra and quagga mussels haven’t yet taken hold in Alberta - but the risk is growing. To strengthen prevention efforts, the province is proposing an annual watercraft pass for boats, canoes, kayaks, jet skis and other vessels. The goal? To fund enhanced inspection and decontamination programs that help protect Alberta’s lakes and rivers from invasive aquatic species.

Albertans are invited to share feedback on how the pass should work - including pricing and whether it should apply per boat or operator - by August 25, 2025. With zebra mussels causing up to $500 million in damages annually in the Great Lakes, prevention remains Alberta’s most cost-effective defence.
