Dance on a Sealskin

Ancient traditions of the Alaskan Yupik Eskimo communities are illustrated as a young girl, Annie, prepares for a coming-of-age ceremony to signify her official entry into the Eskimo communities. In honor of her grandmother, who passed away, Annie plans her first dance at potlatch. Arctic tales of polar bear encounters and building and launching of a walrus-skin boat are sung and drummed out while Annie prepares to dance out a story on a silvery sealskin for family and friends.
Young readers will recognize ancient traditions of the Eskimo people in the drama of a special night.
